Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Best defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” Data-based research and the great majority of administrators, teachers, parents, employers, and recent high school graduates all agree that SEL is just as important as academic learning. SEL contributes to greater academic success, improved student outcomes, and positive school climates. Students with social emotional skills succeed in school, at work, and in life.
