Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

According to CAST, UDL “is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.” Research shows that the way we learn is as unique as our fingerprints. UDL is a way of teaching that gives all students an opportunity to succeed by providing a variety of methods and materials to:

  • engage students, capture their attention, motivate them to learn, and maintain their interest
  • present information and content
  • allow students to respond and express what they have learned

While this is a tremendous challenge it is an even greater opportunity. As we adapt lessons for the most complex learners, these modifications are beneficial for many other students.
